The Kamwala Community Field, where we had our training sessions, is a dusty and rocky field that is used by everyone in the community. We frequently found ourselves without field space for our sessions, as the U19 men's team and the local preschools occupied the full space for their sessions and for PE. I never knew what to expect both location and numbers wise until I arrived in the morning.
Many times, I had to bring football to the Fountain of Hope basketball court, where the only real thing we could do was scrimmage. Most of my kids did not have shoes, socks or football kit, but they proved that you don't need all that to be a great player.
One of the most aggravating parts of playing on the court was the fact that the orphanage used it as an overnight parking lot as a secondary form of income. As great as this idea was in theory, in practice it left us with several parked cars in the middle of the already small space. The kids just played around the cars as if they were not there.
