After my morning coaching sessions, I had the opportunity to teach second grade at the Fountain of Hope school. I had them everyday from around half eleven to about one in the afternoon (or as the Zambians say: "thirteen hours"). I followed the Zambian governmental syllabus for Maths, Science, Social Studies and English, but also had the ability to throw in a little something of my own.
Zambia is a predominantly Christian (and very devout at that) country, however, there are pockets within neighborhoods where people follow the Islamic faith or practice witchcraft. I was able to teach a lesson on comparative religions in Zambia and Europe.
Most of my Science classes revolved around how to prevent diseases and deficiencies like malaria, cholera and HIV/AIDS. Although much of the content may have gone over their heads in terms of vocabulary and due to language barriers, most of the class go the gist of each lesson. In the end that is all I was asked to achieve: make sure that they remember to wash their hands and refrain from anything that could put them in jeopardy of getting really sick.
The classroom setting was nice because I got to experience a whole other side of Fountain, with a completely different group of children to my football team.
